Keerthy Suresh’s upcoming film, Penguin, directed by debutant Eshvar Karthic, was supposed to hit the screens in the first week of May. However, due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, the makers couldn’t release the film as planned.
According to the latest reports, the streaming rights of Penguin have been secured by Amazon Prime Video and the film will have its digital premiere in June. Earlier, the makers of Jyotika’s Ponmagal Vandhaal announced that the film will release on Amazon Prime Video this month. If this happens, then Penguin would be the second film in Tamil to release directly on an OTT platform.
A source close to the development said, “The makers have initiated talks with Amazon Prime Video and they are planning to release the film in both Tamil and Telugu. However, an official announcement will be made only after signing the agreement.”
Produced by Karthik Subbaraj’s Stone Bench Films, Penguin is touted to be a women-centric thriller. The title and the first look poster of the film were revealed on October 17, 2019, on Keerthy Suresh’s birthday.
Keerthy Suresh will be seen playing the role of a pregnant woman in the film. Major portions of it were shot in Ooty.
Meanwhile, the Mahanati star is waiting for the release of her Malayalam film, Marakkar Arabikadalinte Simham, featuring Mohanlal in the lead role. The film is based on the life of Kunjali Marakkar, the naval chief of the Zamorin of Calicut. Keerthy is also a part of Rajinikanth’s much-awaited film, Annaatthe, directed by Siruthai Siva.
