Nelson Mandela is an icon of the global struggle for justice. He was a great leader of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. He emancipated the people of South Africa and helped them achieve democracy. He was imprisoned for nearly three decades for his struggle against white minority rule in South Africa. He never compromised with tyrants. Also he never lost his determination to fight. During those years, he was the most famous political prisoner in the world. The white-led government made every effort to suppress the struggle but failed. Eventually the international community pressured them to surrender. They released Mandela and agreed to change the country's constitution. In 1993, Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and in 1994 he became the country's first black president. He retired from public life in 2004. Nadine Gordimer said that Nelson Mandela was central to their time. In a 1963 statement at the Rivonia trial, he also said, "During my lifetime I have devoted myself to the struggle of the African people." He is called "Madiba" by his countrymen. He is no more but will be remembered by all for his humanity, kindness and dignity. Still people all over the world revere and strive to be a selfless leader like him.
